Social
Studies at Waimea Country School
Our social studies program centers on understanding
different communities:
- Family (our school and family ‘ohana)
- Local (the locales in which
we live – Waimea,
Kapa‘au, Hawi, Honoka‘a, Waikoloa, and
other small villages throughout the region)
- Regional (North Hawai‘i, our Island of Hawai‘i,
and the Hawaiian Archipelago)
- National
- Global
Through the study of our own
communities and a variety of different cultures,
we help children develop a deepened appreciation
for themselves which helps encourage them to become
contributing members of society. Hawaiian
Studies is part of Social Studies, and its units help
enliven investigations at every level.

Levels 1 and 2
Students at these levels engage
in activities that focus on their understanding of
self, family, and our local community. Personal and family histories are researched
and shared in addition to that of our School and town. Students
make and read maps, engage in citizenship activities,
and begin to understand the differences between wants
and needs.
Levels 3 and 4
The cornerstones of learning at
these levels are activities that focus on the Hawaiian
Islands, the State of Hawai‘i
and our nation in which students compare and contrast
the histories of indigenous peoples. In geographic
studies, types of maps and identification of states and
regions combine with an introduction to human geography. Different
cultures and the effects of one onto another are explored;
the role of government and responsibility of citizenship
are discussed; and aspects of economy, such as supply
and demand, are introduced.
