Mathematics at Waimea Country School

Our math program is aligned with the national standards of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.  Incorporated within the curriculum is number sense, geometric sense, algebraic sense, probability and statistics, measurement, and mathematical communication.  To support achievement in mathematics, teachers encourage students to explore, conclude, practice, and take risks with their learning so they develop confidence in their problem-solving ability.

Levels 1-4

In Levels 1-4, we use the Singapore Math system as the basis for instruction.  The Singapore system has received much international attention and acclaim as a balanced instructional approach between drill and creative problem-solving.  Often using a unique picture-drawing presentation to solve problems, Singapore moves from concrete to abstract concepts in a rational way which often accelerates student learning.  Rather than relying on algorithms alone (sets of rules for solving a problem in a finite number of steps), students really have to think carefully to solve most of the problems in Singapore Math.  In this way, Singapore’s focus on teaching mathematical thinking, as opposed to rote problem solving, is a significant benefit.
