urriculum:

In Level 3, children are taught the core subjects – Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies, with computer skills and study skills integrated throughout the curriculum.  Literacy skills encompassing content reading and decoding are taught through the experiences of Readers’ and Writers’ Workshops.  Students become introduced to the different types of literature, such as biographies, poetry, and mystery.  Reading for information becomes a part of the learning process at this level as early research skills and different levels of comprehension are addressed.  Through the content areas of Science and Social Studies, children gain a deeper understanding of the world and the peoples around them.  Our Hawaiian Studies program is integrated into the content areas of Science, Social Studies, Art, Language Arts, and Music.  In this way, children also gain an appreciation and awareness of the culture that is unique to Hawai‘i.

Sui Lan Gomez- Level 3 Teacher

Sui Lan Gomez was born on O‘ahu and reared in Kailua-Kona.  When she was growing up, Kailua had one traffic light, two gas stations, one grocery store, and only one school, serving grades K-8.  Sui Lan loved assisting her teachers with correcting papers, and at the time, she never thought she would actually become a teacher one day.

Sui Lan earned a Bachelor’s Degree with Distinction in Elementary Education from the University of Hawai ‘i – Mānoa, with a minor in Language Arts.  Prior to coming to Waimea Country School , Sui Lan’s teaching experiences included schools on O‘ahu and Hawai‘i Island in the State Department of Education, Hawai‘i Preparatory Academy , and private homeschooling.
