Kindergarten is an important time for reinforcing new skills, especially for reading, writing, and number sense.  It is also a time when children learn effective new ways to relate with other children and adults.  Ms. Doty’s Kindergarten classroom is arranged into learning “centers” for Science, Language Arts, Mathematics, and Art, a configuration that encourages creative exploration and interaction.  The curriculum is multi-sensory and makes generous use of hands-on activities that allow children to work together and develop their unique talents and interests.  Within a safe, nurturing environment, the children gain skills in letter and word recognition, number and counting skills, writing for communication, and awareness of the natural world and community around them.

In Kindergarten (Level 1), we strive to create a learning environment that promotes:

  • A positive self-image
  • Consideration and respect for others
  • Ownership and responsibility for our learning
  • Creative thinking and problem-solving
  • Respect for rules and authority as healthy boundaries
  • Moral excellence and character development

Mary Doty - Level 1 Teacher

Mary was raised on a cattle ranch in Northern California and attended a three-room schoolhouse from first through eighth grades.  With this happy experience, Mary feels right at home at Waimea Country School!  In fact, the bell Mr. Hustace rings each morning to signal the start of another day of school is an old cow bell that Mary’s mother rang each day to call her children in from play.

Mary graduated from Sonoma State University with a double major in Clinical Psychology and Physical Education.  She later received her teaching credential with specialization in Early Childhood Development. Mary taught Kindergarten at St. Helena Elementary School in St. Helena, California, and at Pueblo Vista Elementary School in Napa Valley.

After Mary’s three children left for college, she moved to Waimea and has made it her permanent home ever since.  Mary is the fourth generation of her family to live here, and she has many fond memories of summer visits when Waimea was still a tiny village. Her favorite pastime was to climb Buster Brown and slide down on big pieces of cardboard. These days, Mary prefers to hike down instead!
