| HEAD NOTES
Aloha WCS ‘Ohana! Welcome to the 2009/2010 School Year! We’ve had a terrific start, with students immediately engaged in classes and with a fabulous turnout at the Back to School Picnic last Thursday. Thank you so much for your support of our keiki and our school. Volunteering at the school, turning out for events, participating in fundraising efforts, and staying up on what’s happening at the school are all important ways that you can show your child the importance of his or her education. Hands-on support by family members is at the core of this school. This
office newsletter, Da
Scoops, comes out once a month. It is emailed to you on the
Tuesday
after classroom newsletters and calendars come out. It is
also emailed to extended family (at your request) and is posted on our
Web site.
This is just one of the many ways that we strive to keep you connected
with us
as partners in the education of your children. As always, never
hesitate to
contact me if you have questions or comments. My door is always open!

| PARENT ASSOCIATION We are happy to have Erika Stuart returning as WCS Parent Association President for the 2009/2010 school year. Mahalo for your time and effort, Erika! As a parent with a child enrolled at WCS, you are automatically a member of the WCS Parent Association. Read the mission of the WCS PA here. The WCS Parent Association provides support in a variety of ways from attending functions, such as Open House, as ambassadors to working on fundraising projects. Rather than holding regular meetings, the Association connects via email and puts short-term committees together for specific purposes. Each class has a designated Level Leader. This "room parent" helps the teacher coordinate parent support for the class, from chaperoning field trips to organizing class parties. If you haven't already, you should soon be hearing from your child's Level Leader. We are looking for parents to help out with the upcoming Aloha Festivals Parade preparations ~ watch for information coming soon through the Level Leaders. Currently, some parents are working on soliciting donations for the upcoming silent auction at the Oktoberfest (see related story). |
BACK TO SCHOOL/CURRICULUM NIGHT ~ Thursday,
Sept 3, 6:00 P.M. Please don’t miss this important event! This is the time for teachers to talk directly with parents about the learning program, specific curriculum issues, homework expectations, classroom policies and procedures, and more. It is important for us to be a united team, working together in the best interest of your son or daughter. Watch for Curriculum Guides coming home in next week’s Tuesday Packet email. Board members
will also be on hand that night to answer
questions and let you know about how you can contribute to the overall
success
of the school. We know
attendance goes up when childcare is available. Can you help with this?
If so, please contact Amy as soon as possible so we can get this set
up. Mahalo. |
|
| TARDY POLICY Just a reminder... The bell rings promptly at 8:00 a.m. If students are on the school grounds when the bell rings, they should go directly to class. If a student arrives soon after the bell rings (up to 8:15 a.m.), he or she should go directly to class to minimize the impact of the tardy. The classroom teacher will mark the tardy on the attendance slip. Attendance slips are sent to the office at 8:15 a.m., so a student arriving after 8:15 a.m. should go to the office to sign in. |
FOOD
PANTRY PROJECT Students will be
collecting donated food items each Monday morning at our 'Ohana Meeting
to take over to the Food Pantry on Tuesday morning. Please donate what
you can! Even a single can of food makes a difference. We collected 33 cans
plus 20 other items at yesterday's meeting. Wow! We will also
be growing food in our school garden to donate. Feel free to bring in
extra fruits or vegetables from your garden as well. Mahalo! |

| OKTOBERFEST, Friday, October 23, 2009 ~
6:00 - 9:00 p.m. Waimea Country School is
partnering with the North Hawaii Rotary Club on a fundraising effort
this fall. We will be running a silent auction at the Rotary's
established Oktoberfest event. This is a win-win for our organizations.
We provide an auction with valuable goods and services from local
businesses, giving a boost to the event "draw," and the Rotary Club
manages the logistics of the event. WCS Parents Zizi Zolten and Kathryn Freitas and Board members Randy Campbell and Rebecca Keliihoomalu are already working to solicit donations for this auction. Every donated item we sell is pure profit for the school. You will soon be receiving an email about making a donation of goods and services yourself. Within the next few weeks, you will be receiving a detailed description of what is involved and how you can participate to help the school. A hallmark of this wonderful little school is how the community pulls together to get things done. We hope we can count on you! |
